Our Bi-lingual Journey by Jordan Wagenseller Jones

January 7, 2021Our family has been part of HudsonWay Immersion School over the last ten years (and ongoing) through our three children. We have been so pleased and grateful to see the growth and development of our children through their education at HWIS. In HWIS, we found an environment that not only provided them with a robust bilingual and bicultural education, but with also top-notch instruction across all subjects while supporting the social and emotional growth of each unique child.
All three of our children started in the preschool classes at HWIS where the focus early on was exposure to conversational Mandarin Chinese through playing, singing and learning. This helped build their confidence in the language and also began developing their learning skills in preparation for elementary school years. From Kindergarten through fifth grade, our children continued to gain fluency in their Mandarin Chinese speaking, reading and writing. In parallel, they also enjoyed learning about various subjects in English as well. Many lessons ended with a culmination of a final presentation or project that incorporated and showcased their equal mastering of the subject in both Mandarin Chinese and English.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the warm, nurturing and supportive environment of the teachers and community of HWIS. With a faculty of native teachers and experienced educators led by an administration with proven track records of building and leading other successful bilingual programs, the school has a strong team that not only understands the importance and complexity of running an immersion school but also appreciates the softer skills needed in supporting our children during some of their most formative educational years.
When the time came for my oldest to move on to her next school, we were fully supported by HWIS throughout the ex-missions process. HWIS founder, Sharon Huang, and the Head of School, Sue Ha spent time with us to understand what we were looking for in an ongoing school and coordinated a full team approach with the teachers to help put together a thorough application highlighting the strengths of our daughter. We were beyond excited when she did receive multiple acceptances from top tier schools on our list.
In a city with no shortage of excellent educational options, we feel lucky to have found HWIS. At HWIS, our children have built a strong foundation of bilingual fluency and cognitive learning skills that we are confident will help them succeed in any of their future endeavors. We cannot recommend HudsonWay Immersion School highly enough!
