HudsonWay

International Sleepaway Camp

(June 25-July 8)

We welcome students ages 9-13 to experience a 2-week international sleep-away camp on a 220-acre camp in Northern NJ. Organized by HudsonWay Immersion School, this camp provides endless opportunities to campers to try new things, build & strengthen friendships, reach for new goals, and become more caring, responsible, respectful and honest. This program is designed to maximize opportunities for students to practice language development with their peers while enjoying the fun of camp. Our native speaking teachers of English, Mandarin and Spanish teachers support the camp staff to make learning fun and immersive.

Students experience a program focused on appreciation of the great outdoors, personal growth, community building and understanding of other cultures. Students will break into groups based on their interest in the immersive language – English, Mandarin, or Spanish.

The Immersion Camp Experience
This camp is for students who have had previous experience in the target language (Mandarin or Spanish) and are interested in further immersing themselves in a hands-on, outdoor camp experience. HudsonWay Immersion School teachers, all of whom are native speakers and teach during the school year, are the guides for this fun-filled summer adventure. The schedule will consist of half the day spent in English on team building activities, and free choice activities taught by experienced camp counselors, and half the day divided into language groups for outdoor exploration, crafts, mealtime conversation, games, movies, and storytelling led by HudsonWay teachers. Some activities will alternate being conducted in English vs. Target language depending on the day. (see chart)

Here are some of the topics for the outdoor exploration:
- Tree Identification
- Trees as Habitats
- Trees in Trouble
- Climate Change
- Soil
- Bugs
- Birds
- Pond Ecology
- Water

During the day, students study ornithology, pond ecology, tree studies, and wilderness survival while also enjoying activities such as hiking, zip-lining, ropes courses, boating, swimming, rock-climbing wall, archery, sports, and arts and crafts. The camp location provides an extraordinary retreat in the 200+ acres of pristine lake, ponds, fields, and forests with an inspiring setting for youth.

During the evenings, students enjoy various activities such as barbecue dinners, bonfires, talent shows, game nights, or international movies shown in various languages.

This summer sleep-away camp sets the stage for a comfortable acclimation to the U.S. for international students and sets the foundation for long-term friendships and a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.
