Learning Without Borders: A Transformative Journey in Costa Rica
May 10, 2026At HudsonWay Immersion School, global travel is a core part of the learning experience—not an add-on. Each year, students participate in a fully planned international trip, alternating between Mandarin- and Spanish-speaking destinations. These experiences are designed more than a year in advance with a clear goal: to bring language learning to life through authentic cultural immersion, meaningful connection, and real-world application.
From March 16–26, 2025, a group of 11 students traveled to China for an 11-day immersive experience, accompanied by three faculty leaders—David Heller, NJ Campus Principal, and Mandarin teachers Na Zhang and Jian Zhang. This trip was uniquely designed as a fully student-focused experience, with no parent chaperones, allowing students to develop independence, confidence, and deeper engagement with language and culture.
This journey is part of a four-year global travel series, with Taiwan planned for Spring 2027 and Spain in 2028.
More Than a Trip: A Fully Immersive Experience
Our recent trip to China was more than a travel experience—it was a deeply immersive journey where language, culture, and human connection came to life in the most meaningful ways.
From the moment students arrived in Beijing and later Luoyang, they were welcomed with extraordinary warmth by sister school communities. Thoughtfully planned welcome ceremonies, classroom visits, and shared activities created an immediate sense of belonging.
As Mandarin teacher Jian Zhang reflected, “This experience went far beyond a school visit—it became a true family connection.”
Living the Language Through Homestay
One of the most powerful aspects of the trip was the homestay experience. Living with host families for multiple nights allowed students to step fully into daily life—sharing meals, exploring neighborhoods, watching movies, and building genuine relationships.
“Having to rely on their Mandarin skills in a household where English was barely spoken was the true test of their ability to communicate,” shared David Heller.
Students were not simply observing culture—they were living it.
History, Culture, and Real-World Learning
From walking along the Great Wall to exploring ancient capitals like Luoyang and Kaifeng, history became tangible and real.
“Students were not just tourists; they were active learners, asking questions, making connections, and developing a deeper understanding of Chinese history, traditions, and modern life,” said Na Zhang.
There were also joyful, spontaneous moments that captured the spirit of the experience—students being approached for autographs in a school cafeteria of over 3,000 peers, playing basketball together, exploring vibrant night markets in Luoyi Ancient City, and sharing laughter over new foods and cultural discoveries.
Language in Action
Language immersion was at the heart of every experience. Throughout the trip, students used Mandarin in authentic, everyday situations—ordering food, negotiating prices at markets, asking questions, and engaging in conversations with locals.
One memorable moment, recalled by David, captured this beautifully: “Without hesitation, a student engaged a native Chinese passenger on the train and successfully negotiated a seat change. It was an example of how our students can communicate naturally and persuasively to meet their needs.”
Jian also shared a standout moment when a student successfully explained and justified bringing a souvenir through train security—entirely in Mandarin.
“It was a wonderful example of confidence, cultural understanding, and real-world language use,” he noted.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
Even beyond the trip, the impact continued. Jian described a moment back in the classroom when an American student spoke in Mandarin and the visiting Chinese student answered in English—each embracing the other’s language within the same exchange. It was a simple yet profound example of immersion at its best.
Throughout the journey, students experienced tremendous personal growth. Living in a new country, navigating unfamiliar environments, and communicating across language barriers pushed them beyond their comfort zones.
“Students learned to manage their own belongings, adapt to new environments, and support one another—building independence, resilience, and confidence,” Na observed.
What was especially striking was how naturally students began to use Mandarin as the trip progressed.
“There was less and less need to encourage them—they were negotiating, asking questions, and engaging without hesitation,” David shared.
Building Meaningful Connections
The connections formed during this trip were equally meaningful. Through a months-long pen pal program leading up to the visit, students had already begun building relationships.
Meeting in person—and later hosting one another—brought those friendships full circle.
“Seeing them recognize each other and continue their friendships across continents was truly meaningful,” Jian reflected.
The HudsonWay Difference
What made this experience truly unique was its depth and authenticity. This was not a sightseeing trip—it was a full cultural and educational immersion.
Students attended real classes, lived with local families, and formed genuine, lasting relationships.
As Na shared, “This trip transforms classroom learning into real-world experience.”
At its core, this journey reflects the HudsonWay Immersion philosophy: language is not just something to learn—it is something to live.
“Students were not practicing Chinese in a classroom exercise; they were using it to communicate, connect, and build real relationships,” Jian shared.
A Life-Changing Experience
For our students, this was more than a trip. It was a life-changing experience—one that strengthened their confidence, deepened their cultural understanding, and demonstrated the real power of language.
“The HudsonWay trip to China is something that cannot be replicated—it is the ultimate experience for students to truly demonstrate their Mandarin skills,” David concluded.
Most importantly, it is an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.
