December 8, 2024Hands-On Science in Action
At HudsonWay Immersion School, our commitment to academic excellence is not just about textbooks—it’s about hands-on learning that sparks curiosity and fosters critical thinking. Recently, our Science teacher Ms. Dalma Felenyi led the 6th and 7th grade students in an exciting project exploring chemical interactions and the kinetic energy of particles. The students investigated what happens to gas particles when heated and cooled, diving into scientific concepts while developing essential skills like collaboration, problem-solving, and experimentation.
In this project, students answered the intriguing question: “What happens to particles in a sample of air when the air is heated and cooled?” Working in small teams, they used the scientific method to design and conduct their own experiments. Armed with simple materials like bottles, balloons, and bubble solution, they tested their hypotheses about the expansion and contraction of gases. What followed was an exploration of trial and error—one group achieved the expected result, with air expanding to create bubbles, while another group observed the opposite, leading to a valuable discussion about the importance of consistency and thorough experimentation.
The real magic happened when students engaged in meaningful discussions with their peers, sharing their results and refining their approaches. This project was not only about learning science—it was about learning how to work together, think critically, and embrace challenges. The excitement in the classroom was contagious, as students took ownership of their experiments, celebrated their successes, and learned from unexpected outcomes.
At HWIS, we believe that the best learning happens when students are active participants in their education. This hands-on project is just one example of how we encourage our students to think deeply, collaborate, and apply their learning to the world around them. Our dual-language environment further enhances these skills, helping students develop both academically and personally as they build language proficiency in Spanish and Mandarin.
We are proud to offer a rigorous and dynamic curriculum that prepares students for success not only in science but in all areas of their academic journey.
