We celebrated Thanksgiving all week with stories, games, arts, and crafts. Our students developed social-emotional skills such as gratitude and fostering healthy relationships through activities and thankful letters.
This Thanksgiving students at HudsonWay Immersion School (HWIS) navigated multiple cultures expressing what they are thankful for in Mandarin or Spanish in the context of a traditional American holiday.
Preschool students focused on learning specific terms associated with Thanksgiving in Mandarin and Spanish and created traditional crafts. They even role-played cooking and eating a meal together as a class!
In English language arts, our 2nd grade elementary students were immersed in the Thanksgiving spirit by participating in a creative writing workshop. After reading the book “Turkey in Disguise”, they wrote stories in which they disguised their turkeys as another object to prevent it from being eaten on Thanksgiving.
Finally, our older students wrote stories and cards to express what they are thankful for this holiday. They practiced their Mandarin or Spanish skills by learning new terms associated with the holiday and speaking about their emotional wellbeing.
This focus on values and gratitude is part of the school’s mission to develop the child as a whole and help them become global citizens from a social-emotional point of view.
