First Day of School
October 1, 2021NBC News featuring Jack Perkins
November 9, 2021From young to old, our students celebrated the Latin culture with food and fashion. Our 2-3 year olds made tacos and their own Mexican clothes! Some of our elementary students learned about “Las Cholitas Escaladores” a group of female indigenous climbers from Bolivia who live and work in the mountains as cooks or mountain guides. Images of women wearing colorful skirts climbing the mountain has inspired the sport of alpinism in Latin America.
On October 24 from 1-3pm, HWIS is proud to host a free virtual celebration showcasing a “Rainbow of Cultures”. HWIS has invited Ballet Hispanico, the largest Latinx cultural organization in the U.S., to conduct a salsa workshop. We will also hear a story read to us from award-winning Spanish author Marta Zafrilla, learn how to make arepas – a cornmeal staple of Venezuela, make Mexican Amate paintings, visit the kitchen of a Colombian restaurant, workout to the rhythm of Zumba, and much more.
