March 8, 2021New Jersey campus art teacher Christine Maloney introduced students in Grade 2 to Jacob Lawrence, an African American artist inspired by the cultural visionaries of the Harlem Renaissance. Students learned about the great migration and the beginning of Harlem as a creative engine producing incredible art, music, and poetry. Students were asked to contemplate the difficult struggle for families that endured segregation and depict a struggle in their own lives through the creation of art in the spirit of Jacob’s “narrative synthetic cubism "style.
