Halloween can be frightening for a child. It can be unpredictable; people don’t look or act the same. The decorations that children are exposed to just by walking down the street can look scary. Here are a few tips on tackling Halloween challenges and fears with your children.

Preschoolers are great at changing their mind. Don’t be surprised if your child wants to be a cupcake on Tuesday and a pirate by Thursday. Preschoolers change their minds quite often. You child may decide they are over the costume they chose or they may decide it is too itchy, too heavy, or they are simply too hot in it. Do not take any of these things personal. Be flexible!

How can you prepare your child for Halloween?

• Start small by showing your child Halloween decorations
• Play dress up at home before Halloween
• Talk to your child about pretend play
• Teach your child to ask, “who are you underneath your costume?”
• Tell them that underneath a costume there is a real person
• Maintain daily routines as much as possible
