How Can We Respond to Anti-Asian Sentiment?

This week we saw another incident adding to the increasing Anti-Asian violence reported in the news since the pandemic began a year ago. These frightening and appalling images hit home for many of us because the victims remind us of ourselves, family members, friends, and neighbors. We as a school community respect and value people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. There is no more important work than instilling these values in our students and children. Each one of us can do our part to use this as a teachable moment.

Immersion Education: Supporting Equity, Unity and Gifted Students  

Immersion education can enhance unity in future generations. A study conducted at the University of Massachusetts showed that white students who learned Spanish were more likely to have positive attributes associated with photos of Latino children as compared to white students who studied alongside Latino students but were not learning Spanish.

HWIS Celebrates Literacy Month

We kick off our month in Week 1 with students “dressed” in celebration of their favorite characters in literature. Students can come to school dressed according to the theme of the day:  Pajamas (Monday), Foreign Character Day (Tuesday), Silly Stories (Wacky Wednesday), Myths and Legends (Thursday), and Fantasy (Friday)
