Through immersion and project-based learning, HWIS Elementary After School classes create the most effective and enjoyable environment to develop language skills. Children build upon previous lessons and work cooperatively in projects that build confidence, planning and critical thinking skills. Projects form the basis of motivation for language learning. The projects are grounded in practical real life situations.

Sample Unit Project – My Community

Project:  Students are asked to develop a community map of their neighborhoods. They can choose to draw or take photos to make this map. The map needs to include school, restaurant, train station, hospital, post office, grocery and theater.  Students need to write a paragraph to describe their neighborhood.  Students will give a 5-minute presentation to the class introducing their neighborhood, discussing their favorite places, and describing why they like those places.  The student will answer questions from classmates about his/her community.

Additional resources and support

Students in the HWIS after school program have the benefit of the resources of our day school program. The storybooks, art, science, math and music materials are used in class to make the learning hands on and fun.  We are also able to use technology tools such as I-pads, and Smart Boards.  Finally, we make available online resources in the form of e-books and other supplemental text materials for in class and at home work.  Our teachers assign differentiated homework to reinforce the learning and maximize progress during the year.
