Immerse your child in a language learning adventure while exploring different ecosystems and cultures from around the world!!

This summer, campers at HWIS will travel to Mandarin or Spanish-speaking regions around the world engaging in science and culture oriented learning. Classrooms will transform into rainforests, deserts, and even the Silk Road! Within each landscape, campers will explore the region’s natural and cultural characteristics through science, art, music, cooking, and other hands-on activities. Topics will include: the habitat of giant pandas, the life cycle and importance of silkworms, the ecology of different forests, and much more!

Experienced, native speaking teachers lead activities in a 100% Mandarin or Spanish immersion environment supporting campers of all language levels.

Campers will explore the following regions during the summer
:

Mandarin

Adventure to Chengdu: Land of Abundance (2 weeks)
Due to its unique geographic location and climate, Chengdu is an important city in China’s history. It is the perfect habitat for giant pandas and holds the largest panda research facility in China. Our campers’ journey begins by exploring the characteristics of Chengdu’s geography and climate. Students will learn about the panda’s natural habitat and recreate it in the classroom. As they create a bamboo forest, students will explore other wildlife, as well as food chains, and life cycles.

Spanish

Adventure to La Patagonia in Argentina (2 weeks)
Located on the southern tip of Argentina, La Patagonia has been a popular destination for backpackers due to its terrain and ocean views. Students will start by exploring Argentina’s geography and climate by creating 3D elevation maps and home-made thermostats. Then campers will focus in on La Patagonia’s fauna, food, and culture. At the end, the class will make their own travel guide for future La Patagonia tourists.

Being on the north border of China, Inner Mongolia is influenced by nearby Russia and features unique scenery, culture, and architecture. Learn about the desert and high mountain ecosystems where endangered snow leopards and wild sheep graze. Students will also focus on architecture found in the Gobi Desert. They will learn about popular destinations by building various 3D models in the classroom.

Adventure to Las Islas Galapagos in Ecuador (2 weeks)
Galapagos are a cluster of 13 islands located a little over 600 miles from Ecuadorian mainland. Students will learn about Charles Darwin’s famous visit to the Galapagos. Then the classroom will become their own Galapagos as they reimagine Darwin’s visit to the island through a Reader’s Theater to dramatize the event.

Students will start by learning about a silk worm’s life cycle and the many popular products that are made with silk. Afterwards, campers will explore the Qipao and create their own designs.

Costa Rica’s rainforests have made it a popular destination for vacationers. With towns like Monteverde, it is easy to see why. The classroom will transform into a rainforest, allowing campers to explore its fauna and flora. Students will also learn about local Costa Rican customs and expressions.

Students will focus on the importance of the Silk Road, how animals transported goods, and how culture traveled across the road via early business interactions between the East and West. The classroom will transform into a trading market so campers can experience buying and selling different goods.

Adventure to El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico (1 week)
El Yunque National Forest in northeastern Puerto Rico is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System, and is home to unique geographical features, foliage and wildlife. Campers will learn about conservation and how we enjoy national forests and parks, trying their hands at camping skills and going on nature walks.
