HWISPA is the official parent organization of the HudsonWay Immersion School. All parents of current HudsonWay Immersion School students are members. The HWISPA is a financially self-sustaining organization, and all activities are funded by membership dues and fundraising activities.

The objective of HWISPA is to organize the parent support of their children’s education at HWIS and to increase involvement and a sense of community for parents.

The HWISPA is overseen by volunteer officers who work with school administration to oversee parent involvement in school events. Whether parents volunteer for an hour or run an event, the HWISPA only functions as a result of our incredible volunteers and we are grateful for everyone’s help.

Welcome letter from NY officers

Hello parents!

We hope you’ve all had an enjoyable summer! Surely by now you’re all sick of the lovely weather and the days at the beach, and are looking forward to the onset of autumn and September!

We’d like to introduce ourselves, wish a warm welcome those parents new to HudsonWay Immersion School, and welcome back those returning this fall. Formed in September 2012, the HudsonWay Parent Association of New York (née Bilingual Buds Parent Association) is entering its third year. We’re relatively young, and are happy for anyone to join us, help steer the direction of the organization, or volunteer with events.

The main function of the HWISPA is to serve as a bridge for two-way communication between parents and the school and to determine what we as a parent body can do to help foster our children’s education. We are also considering opportunities for fund-raising, and, of course, discussing and soliciting ideas on how to spend any proceed in a targeted fashion to best benefit the students.

In the past, the HWISPA, and our members (including a few amazing class parents!) have organized group outings to the Big Apple Circus and Mets games, hosted a private movie showing of Disney’s Cars in Mandarin, picnics, teacher appreciation events, and more. This year we are looking forward to continuing the tradition of social events to strengthen our parent community with these and more!

We’re looking less forward to continuing the tradition of requesting dues… but it’s a necessity. (There’s always a catch, isn’t there?) We’d like to keep it in line with last year’s amount, at $50/child in the day school, and $25/child for the after-school programs. These nominal dues help us with smaller fees like park permits and room rentals for functions like a parent town hall, and teacher appreciation events. Since the parent association hasn’t yet legally changed its name, please remit the dues via a separate check made out to Bilingual Buds Parent Association of New York when returning your welcome packet forms.

There are so many opportunities to help out, either by

  • volunteering to help handle an event,
  • being a class parent,
  • joining us on the board,
  • or just sending in great ideas.

Please let us know if you’re interested! Grab one of us in the morning chaos of drop off, or email us at hwispany@gmail.com!

See you in September,

Kathy Avnur, Veronica Lubczenko, Mike Soss
