Our goal is to provide students with an environment in which they are eager and available for learning. This means creating a stimulating atmosphere with many opportunities for exploration and inquiry. We select themes which we study in depth, integrating learning across disciplines such as language arts, math, science and social studies.

Social and Emotional Preparation

Our active, academic preschool program builds school readiness skills, while fostering curiosity, creativity and confidence.

Language Arts

HWIS’ full immersion environment, in combination with an integrated and proprietary curriculum, emulates how students learned their first language—relevant, functional vocabulary is introduced in context, within a secure, engaging and supportive community. In addition to the everyday routines of the classroom, show and tell, readalouds and dramatic play provide students with casual speaking and presentation opportunities to continually develop their functional vocabulary.

Mandarin Language Arts

HWIS uses the Chinese Language System of Simplified Characters, developed and used by the People’s Republic of China. Exposure to tones and the richness of the Mandarin language is critical at an early age when the brain can more easily understand and replicate sounds. Our Mandarin objective for preschoolers is to build a solid foundation for comprehension and fluency. The environment is literacy rich with exploring on topics in depth in order to build vocabulary and foster cognitive skills. Starting at age 4 some writing is introduced. In kindergarten and first grade, our students start an intensive study of Hanyu Pinyin.

Spanish Language Arts

HWIS’ native speaking teachers come from a variety of backgrounds, including Latin America and Spain, broadening our students’ exposure and respect for different colloquialisms and regional differences and cultures. Our Spanish objective for preschoolers is to build a solid foundation for comprehension and fluency. The Language Arts curriculum introduces the Spanish alphabet beginning in our two’s class, with a focus on the mechanics of Spanish writing, such as spelling, syntax, and the use of accents starting in Pre K (age 4).

English Language Arts

Our preschool English Language Arts curriculum is a balanced literacy program. Academic goals focus on building strong pre-reading, pre-writing, and handwriting skills, as well as enhancing listening and communication abilities.


In our preschool reading program, children are exposed to the power, utility and complexity of language. Through read alouds and shared reading experiences, students learn to distinguish between letters, sounds, words and sentences. They build the foundation for a love of reading, empowered by reading strategies, guided reading cues, and communication tools to respond to a variety of texts, lyrics and stories.


Students are introduced to the stages, processes and products of writing. In preparation, students develop their fine motor skills through various grip activities and are encouraged to experiment with different writing utensils. We teach the Zaner Blozer method of handwriting to start students on solid footing as they begin the lifelong practice of putting pen to paper.

Speaking & Listening

Students are taught the tenets of effective communication and active listening. Participation in daily dialogues including morning meeting , show and tell, dramatic play, and responses to literature help students practice speaking in complete sentences, engage in question-and-answer dialogue, make predictions, and express their feelings.


In preschool we use concrete manipulatives and hands on learning to develop a strong understanding of the number system. Critical concepts include spatial relationships, sorting and classifying, shapes & patterns, and number sense. Geometry, measurement, and concepts of time and money are also introduced in terms that preschoolers can grasp, and then expand as they build mathematical “fluency.”


Our preschool science program is inquiry-based and has been designed to allow the natural curiosity of children to blossom. It is our role to guide the children as they investigate, develop and discover ideas and concepts that will help them to make sense of the world around them. Children dive into high interest topics including weather, water, nature and habitats, biology, inventions and inventors, among others. Students will observe, think critically, hypothesize, and effectively communicate about their predictions and findings.

Social Studies/Culture

We begin social studies exploration with our preschoolers as a full sensory study of communities, both large and small—including our classroom, family, neighborhood, and identity. Content is presented using a spiral approach that knits challenging concepts and ideas together, including geographical thinking, currency, historical perspective, government (rules and laws), and culture & society. Students develop and assert their independence while learning how to interact with fellow inhabitants of the world.

Fine Arts

Our preschool fine arts program has been sequentially and age-appropriately designed to allow children to explore their own creativity through a variety of mediums. We incorporate visual arts, music, dance and drama into our daily curriculum. During this exploration process, children become more aware of their strengths and preferences while at the same time learning to take risks in other areas. Our emphasis is on the creative process, not on the final product. Children learn the concepts of how the different art forms relate to the development of self expression and cultural awareness, thus fostering self esteem and individuality.


Music is everywhere. Our music program teaches preschoolers the “vocabulary” to acknowledge and interpret what they hear. Students explore rhythm, melody, harmony, tone, form, and expression using both traditional and less traditional instruments, in a classroom and outdoor setting. The music curriculum encourages singing, playing, creating, and listening with opportunities for individual as well as group response to the miraculous experience of sound.

Visual Arts

Our visual arts program focuses on the experience of art and its communication of ideas. Using different tools, techniques and materials, students explore and enjoy a full sensory introduction to drawing, painting, clay/play-doh, and 2D and 3D sculpture. Portraits, murals, pottery, mask and doll making represent a small taste of the fullness of our creative arts program.

Physical Education

Our preschool physical arts program uses a variety of problem solving, discovery learning and creative movement to help children develop their physical capabilities while instilling a respect for an active, healthy lifestyle. Children learn the concepts of how their bodies work and move, and how movement relates to the development of health and wellness. Fitness activities include yoga, rhythm and dance, stretching, sports, strengthening, gross motor skills and balance. In addition to fostering athleticism, students develop their interpersonal skills, including cooperation, empathy, and friendship.

Technology/Media Literacy

Students begin a formal technology curriculum beginning in Pre K around age 4. Key topics, integrated with classroom instruction, include exposure to the ipad and computer. The technology focus of our earliest learners involves audio books, keyboarding games and exercises to support their language learning.
