Bill joined the school full time in 2008 after more than 20 years of corporate experience in the healthcare industry. His connection to Asia comes from his work in international business while working as a director at Baxter International and from living in Taipei, Taiwan and Ecuador as a child. His education includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Elizabeth has worked in education for more than 40 years. During her career, she has been a teacher, trainer, curriculum coordinator, world languages supervisor, assistant superintendent and assistant professor. She taught in one of the first immersion education programs in New York City and came to New Jersey in 1988 to pioneer one of the first immersion programs in the state. Elizabeth has assisted in the development and enhancement of many language immersion programs and schools throughout the Tri-State area. She has an M.A. in Educational Administration from the College of New Rochelle, M.S. in Bilingual Education from Long Island University, and B.S. in General Education from Lehman College.
Señorita Irene is originally from Spain. She was a mentor teacher at Hoboken’s Dual Language Charter School, where she developed curriculum, trained teachers in best immersion practices, and administered and analyzed assessments. Irene holds a B.A. in Psychology and two teaching certifications in Early Childhood Education and Special Education from New Jersey City University. She has participated in and presented many teacher workshops and professional development sessions throughout throughout the years. Irene received special training in Writer’s Workshop from the Teachers College, Columbia University, and became certified in the multi-sensory teaching approach of Orton Gillingham.
Plutus Dǎo Shī (导师) originally hails from Taiwan and has over six years of teaching experience in Chinese Mandarin immersion and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. She has expertise in multi-disciplinary instructional delivery and educational technologies and served as both an IB team leader and National Academic League team coach at the Baltimore International Academy. Plutus holds a Masters of Education in English as a Second Language from George Washington University and a B.A. in Theater from the University of Maryland. She served as a classroom teacher in two different Maryland school districts and had her work featured in an exhibit at the National Museum of Language.
Sharon was born in the United States to immigrant parents from Taiwan and did not grow up speaking Mandarin in her household. Prior to founding the school in 2005, Sharon worked in the corporate world for more than 15 years. Her role as international director at Nabisco involved significant travel to Asia and Latin America, forming the basis for her belief in children’s need to become global citizens. Sharon received an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.B.A. from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. She is married to Bill Hicks, and their twin 13-year-old sons recently graduated 5th grade at HWIS.
Antonia or Antonella, as she prefers to be called, received an MA and BA from St. John’s University. She is a certified Early Childhood educator. She taught in the NYC Board of Education for more than five years. She left the public schools to dedicate herself to her children and to help her family’s company. Antonella has served as a substitute in public and private schools. Antonella is very excited to join the HWIS ELA team. She will teach the preschool students
Chaojun Laoshi received an MA in Education from Heidelberg University in Ohio and a BA in Broadcasting and Anchoring from Tianjin Unieversity, China. Chaojun worked as a journalist and TV director in Beijing, China. She fell in love with education when she provided tutoring to a young student in Ohio. Chaojun enjoys working with young children and is very pleased to join the HWIS instructional community.
Fran holds a BA in English Literature from Bard College and an MA in Curriculum and Teaching from Teacher’s College. Formerly, she has worked as a head teacher and assistant teacher in preschool through Grade 5 settings. Additionally, she worked in Hong Kong as a curriculum developer.
Hong received an MA in TESOL from the College of Notre Dame in Maryland and a BA in Foreign Language and Literature from the ShanDong Teachers University, China. She is NYS certified and has taught in the NYC public schools in transitional bilingual classes. Prior to coming to NYC, Hong Laoshi taught preschool and developed curriculum for the Baltimore Chinese School, Baltimore, Maryland. She is very excited to join the HWIS Preschool faculty.
Lan graduated with honors from Fordham University. She received an MS in Education. She holds a BA in Cross Culture and English from the Beijing International University, China. Lan Laoshi has taught in a dual language immersion program in a public school and taught Mandarin in private school settings in NYC. She has also taught students with mild disabilities. In school year 15-16, Lan Laoshi taught Preschool 1 and elementary students on the HWIS – New Jersey campus. She is very excited to join the NYC campus family. She will teach Preschool 1 students.
Lisa received her training from the Chinese Language Teacher Association. She attended Brooklyn Institute. She received an Associate degree from North China University. Lisa was bestowed the HWIS best teacher assistant performance award in school year 14-15. This will be Lisa’s third year in HWIS.
Mark received an MS in Teaching and Curriculum from Syracuse University, NYS and a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), Beijing, China. He taught pre-kindergarten in a private early childhood and elementary school in NJ. In addition, he facilitated classes at the Confucius Institute, Beijing, China. This school year, Mark Laoshi will teach our Grades 2-4 students.
Mindy is in the process of attaining an MA in counseling. She has a BA from Oberlin College and has completed all course requirements for NY certification in Childhood Education. Mindy has taught from Preschool to Middle School in both public and private school environments. She is well versed in project based learning approaches and enjoys in-depth novel studies. We welcome her to her first year with the HWIS ELA team. Ms. Mindy will teach the elementary leveled cohorts.
Pang is originally from Hunan province, China. She holds a BA in International Childhood Education from the University for Science and Technology in Beijing, China. She has taught Mandarin in Weibo Chinese School to students from preschool to 5th grade. She had tutored children in Mandarin in the U.S.
Rita is from Zhejiang, China. She graduated from the New York University’s Dual Language Education Program with a Master’s degree. Rita was bestowed the HWIS best teacher performance award in school year 14-15. She has four years of teaching experience and enjoys working with kids, both as a teacher and mom.
Rong graduated with honors from the State University of New York with a BS in Childhood Education and a concentration in Environmental Studies. Rong Laoshi taught in public school in NYC from first to fourth grades and volunteered in special education classrooms in Syracuse, NY. She joined us as a teacher in our immersion camp at the elementary level and is excited to continue as a HWIS day school teacher. Rong Laoshi will teach Kindergarten and first graders in leveled cohorts.
Originally from Beijing, China, Rui Yun majored in Early Childhood Education and has over 35 years of total experience as a teacher and administrator in China, and as a nanny and teacher in the U.S. She has been with HWIS for nearly eight years. She has two children and two grandsons.
Sherry graduated from New York University with a MA in Foreign Language Teacher Education. She also holds a BA in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Tianjin Normal University. Sherry taught our advanced Saturday after school class in the 2014-2015 School Year, and joined us as a Head Teacher for our K/1 Class in January 2015. Sherry completed her student teaching at Brooklyn Technical High School and The Dalton School, teaching Mandarin Chinese. She also volunteered as a Mandarin Chinese Teacher in Thailand.
Wenming has an MA in Linguistics from California State University. She holds an MA in Chinese Classical Philology from the School of Literature in Guanxi Teachers Education University and a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Hunan Normal University. Wenming Laoshi has taught Chinese as a Second Language in a public school in California and in language labs in the USA. She has also taught Mandarin to non-Mandarin speakers in Changsha, China. Wenming is looking forward to joining the HWIS elementary faculty. She will teach the second to fourth graders in leveled cohorts.
Xueting has an MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Fordham University and a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Capital Normal University, Beijing, China. In school year 14-15 and 15-16, Xueting Laoshi taught the Preschool 2 class and elementary students on the HWIS - New Jersey campus. Prior to her experience at HWIS, Xueting has been a Chinese tutor in NYC and has worked as a teacher of Chinese for elementary age students in Brooklyn, New York. Xueting Laoshi will teach Preschool 2.
Yicong graduated with honors from Guangxi University, Nanning, China receiving her BA in English. She also received her MA in TESL from The University of Delaware. Yicong has worked with both preschool through grade 5 students and older students in China and in the U.S. She has taught for over four years prior to HWIS. This is Yicong's second year at HWIS.
Ada has a background in education from the University of Panama where she also taught for 3 years as a kindergarten and elementary teacher. In the U.S., Ada has taught children ranging from preschool through elementary age in content subjects and Spanish. Ada is state certified in Preschool Education.
Señorita Patty has taught in the HWIS After School language program for two years. She holds a BS in Business Administration from la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras and an Associate of Arts in Education from Liberty University. We welcome Patty to our day school program. Señorita Patty will teach Preschool 1.
Originally trained as a lawyer in Cuba, Blanca made a career change and became certified as a Spanish teacher and Preschool through Grade 3 teacher in NJ. Blanca has nearly fifteen years of experience as a preschool and elementary school teacher in Cuba and in NJ.
Diamanto graduated with honors from William Paterson University. She received a BA in Elementary Education. She holds a Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certification and an English Literature Certification. Diamanto has taught at the preschool and elementary levels. She is very happy to join the HWIS family and to have the opportunity to work with the HWIS ELA team.
Dongmei is a certified Teacher of Mandarin in the State of New Jersey. She received a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing University, Beijing, China. She has taught at the preschool and middle school levels in China and in the USA. We would like to welcome Dongmei Laoshi to the HWIS family. Dongmei will teach Preschool 1.
Elizabeth received a BA in Early Childhood Education from Sacred Heart University in Lima, Peru. She is a certified Teacher of Spanish in the state of New Jersey. Señorita Elizabeth has taught early elementary students in Salta (Jump Immersion School) for the last two years. Prior to Salta, Elizabeth taught in HWIS. She is excited to rejoin the HWIS family and will teach Preschool 2.
Fang Laoshi has an MA from Rutgers State University. She is a NJ State certified Teacher of Chinese. She also earned a BS in Engineering from Tongji University, Shanghai. Fang has taught elementary levels in the Linden Public Schools and Livingston’s Huaxia Chinese School and at the Key Elementary Learning Center. She is very honored to become part of the HudsonWay Immersion School faculty.
Huijuan received an MA in Asian Studies from Seton Hall University and an MA in Education in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from Minzu University of China. She acquired a BA in History from Harbin Normal University in Harbin, China. She is also a performer and an instructor of Tijiquan (similar to KungFu). Huijuan Laoshi is very excited to join the HWIS faculty. She will teach Preschool 2.
Jian hails from Shanghai, China and is a fluent speaker of Mandarin and Japanese. Jian has taught Japanese as a Second Language to K-3rd graders. He received an MBA from Bellevue University in Nebraska and a BA in Foreign Languages from Dalian University of Foreign Languages, China. Jian is excited to join the HWIS faculty and will support instruction P1-3.
Jing received her MA in Education and Early Intervention from the University of Pittsburgh. She has worked with young children for the past four years. She loves teaching and feels truly fortunate to find a passion in life that is so rewarding. Her favorite child’s book is “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” This will be Jing’s second year in HWIS.
Lucy is originally from Beijing and graduated from the Beijing Language and Culture University, majoring in English language and literature. She has an MA from Seton Hall University in New Jersey and is currently pursuing her second Master’s in Early Childhood and Special Education. This will be her seventh year in HWIS teaching toddlers through after school students. Previous to this experience, she taught Mandarin in heritage programs and at the high school level.
Michelle has an MA in Early Childhood Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She has experience teaching in early childhood environments and in special education classes. She is trained and implements Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI, RTII). She recently moved to New Jersey when she commenced working at HWIS in the spring.
Michelle is currently pursuing her BA in Education from Kean University. Her Associate degree is in Early Childhood. Michelle taught at the YMCA Little Stars Preschool and the Rainbow Academy. Señorita Michelle joined the HWIS faculty in April of last school year. She will teach Preschool 2 in the fall.
Miranda has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Brock University, Ontario, Canada and a BA in English Literature from Tamkang University, Taipei. Before leaving to take care of her two small children, Miranda worked in HWIS for three years. She loved her experience so much that Miranda will join HWIS, again, as head teacher for this school year.
Paula received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and an Associate degree in International Studies from St. Peter’s College. She taught in HoLa Hoboken Dual Language Charter School and Englewood Public Schools as an immersion teacher.
Raelen is a resident of Chatham, New Jersey. She has taught at the preschool and elementary levels in private and public schools. Raelen graduated with honors from Kean University. She received a BA in Elementary Education and Mathematical Sciences. She also authored a research paper on how to prevent bullying. Raelen is very excited to join the HWIS family. This will be Raelen’s first year with HWIS.
Rosario is originally from Spain. She has a degree in Sociology from the University of Alicante, a degree in Teaching and is in the process of acquiring an MA in Applied Linguistics. Rosario has a certificate in the teaching of second language. She worked as a Teacher of Spanish for pre-K3 and 4 in Bright Horizons and in Saint Mary’s Prep. She loves working with children.
